Common Dental Emergencies
Severe Toothaches
A severe toothache is intense, persistent pain around a tooth or jaw, worsened by chewing or temperature changes, signaling potential decay, infection, or tooth damage.
Rinse with warm water to clean the area and gently floss to remove debris. Use over-the-counter pain medication and apply a cold compress to alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Avoid hot or cold foods and seek dental care promptly.
Knocked-Out Teeth
A knocked-out tooth is completely dislodged from its socket due to trauma, causing immediate pain and bleeding. Time is crucial for successful re-implantation.
Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse gently, and try to reinsert it into the socket if possible. Store the tooth in milk or saliva if reinsertion isn't possible. Seek emergency dental care immediately for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Fractured/Chipped Teeth
A fractured or chipped tooth may cause sensitivity, pain when biting, or rough edges that irritate the tongue and gums.
Save any broken pieces of the tooth, rinse with warm water to clean the area, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact your dentist promptly for assessment and possible bonding or restoration.
Lost Filling/Crown
Losing a filling or crown exposes sensitive tooth structure, leading to discomfort or pain, especially with hot, cold, or sweet foods.
Cover the exposed area with dental cement or sugar-free gum to protect it. Avoid chewing on that side and see your dentist promptly for replacement to prevent further damage or decay.
Swollen Gums
Swollen gums appear red, inflamed, and may be tender or painful. They can indicate gum disease, infection, or irritation.
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation and pain. Avoid irritants like tobacco and schedule a dental appointment to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the tooth and gum. Symptoms include severe, throbbing pain, swelling of the face or gums, and fever.
Rinse with warm salt water to help draw out pus and alleviate pain. Use over-the-counter pain medication and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Seek urgent dental care to prevent the infection from spreading and causing further complications.
